Palaces

The largest and best-preserved palace complex in China is the Forbidden City in Beijing. Palaces are organised along a north–south central axis: main halls line the axis, secondary buildings mirror on both sides, formal halls sit in front and living quarters behind (“court in front, home behind”).

The line down the middle

Symmetry is the first rule: a central axis runs from the gate all the way through, and what is on the left is matched on the right. Whatever matters most sits on the axis itself, at the centre; everything else lines up beside it. To read a Chinese building, look for that line first.

民居 Folk Dwellings

Folk dwellings are architecture at its most everyday. Different climates, landscapes and ways of life shaped the siheyuan of the north, the cave dwellings (yaodong) of the Loess Plateau, the yurt of the grasslands and the tulou of Fujian and Guangdong.

Why houses surround a courtyard

A Chinese house is rarely built alone. A main hall comes first, then rooms close in on all four sides — and the empty space they leave is the courtyard. It is not wasted space: the courtyard is a room without a roof, and the walls that enclose it enclose the family too.

Scenario 1 · the herder

Bayar’s family moves with the flocks — their home comes down, travels, and goes up again wherever the pasture is good.

Scenario 2 · three generations in Beijing

Three generations in one walled courtyard — the oldest live in the sunniest north-facing rooms, and home life stays quietly inside.

Scenario 3 · a farmer on the loess plateau

Liu’s home is carved into the cliff — arched rooms burrowed into earth that keeps them cool in summer and warm in winter.

Scenario 4 · the Hakka clan

Dozens of related families live together in one giant round fortress of rammed earth — a whole clan behind a single gate.

Well done — you matched every family to its home. Four different roofs, four ways of living on the land.

Four homes, four answers to the same question — why are they so different?

It values quiet, privacy and order by age — the elders take the south-facing rooms.

Timber is scarce on the loess plateau, but earth is deep — so they carved the warmth in.

Life follows the pastures, so home itself must travel light.

One clan, one fortress of rammed earth — together they build, together they are safe.

A house is not invented from the imagination. It is the answer that climate, land and a way of life write for you — how you dwell is how you live.

Ritual & Religious

These buildings answered where people turned for order and belief — to heaven, ancestors, gods and the Buddha — and carry the strongest spiritual meaning in Chinese architecture.

Ritual architecture centres on altars (tan-miao). Beijing’s altar complex forms one whole system — Temple of Heaven in the south, Earth in the north, Sun in the east, Moon in the west, with the Imperial Ancestral Temple and Altar of Land and Grain at the centre. The emperor prayed at the Temple of Heaven for good harvests and peace; it covers more than three times the area of the Forbidden City.

Ancestral halls

Village ancestral halls honoured forebears and revered sages while uniting the clan; built on the finest site, they stood for family identity.

Rank written into tile and roof

Imperial · forbidden yellow

The grandest hip roof, stacked two storeys high — height is rank.
Yellow-glazed tiles were reserved for the emperor alone.
e.g. the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the Hall of Prayer.

Folk · grey and low

Plain flush-gable roofs — low and straight, no flourish.
Only grey tiles — no money could buy the forbidden yellow.
e.g. a courtyard house, an everyday village home.

The higher a roof climbs and the richer its tiles, the higher the owner’s rank. Look up first — a roof tells you whose house it is.

Religious building types centre on Buddhist temples (si) and Taoist abbeys (guan), plus mosques and churches. Temple building peaked in the Northern and Southern Dynasties. Famous examples include the White Horse Temple and the Shaolin Temple; the Main Hall of Nanchan Temple on Mount Wutai is the earliest surviving timber hall, and the Potala Palace rises over Lhasa.

Religious buildings preserve relics of many dynasties — temples and related sites make up roughly half of all national protected heritage, a true “safe-deposit box of history.”
Gardens

Chinese gardens combine living, viewing and leisure; built by people, they look as if made by nature. They fall into two broad kinds — imperial and private.

Imperial gardens are vast and magnificent. Besides leisure they served living and governance. The greatest, Yuanmingyuan, was burnt by Anglo-French forces in 1860; the Summer Palace and the Chengde Mountain Resort survive — Chengde, at 5.64 square kilometres, is the largest imperial garden extant.

Private gardens pair house with garden and cluster in Suzhou, Yangzhou and Hangzhou. Builders moved rocks, channelled water and planted flowers, composing scenery that “changes at every step,” sometimes borrowing distant views. The gardens of Suzhou — such as the Humble Administrator’s Garden — are the finest examples.

Traditional Chinese architecture reflects Chinese aesthetics and values — summarised here in three characteristics.

Timber frames

Courtyard groups

Artistic craft

Those red doors and lattice windows look like walls — but they carry no weight.

Why did China build in wood, the West in stone?

China · timber frames

West · stone masonry

Timber fears fire, damp and insects — many dynastic palaces burned down, which is why most ancient buildings still standing in China date from the Ming–Qing era, while the West’s stone temples and arenas have stood for millennia. One tradition keeps heritage alive by renewing it; the other by preserving it just as it was.

When the earthquake comes

Wood is soft. When the ground shakes, a timber house shakes with it and springs back — it does not fight the earthquake. Stone is rigid and cracks instead. That is partly why Chinese building chose timber: not only plentiful and quick to work, but able to survive the shaking.
